It’s a fibre glass ex sailing boat and I want to increase the size of the casting deck, but as you see there is an obstruction. What should I do, cut the top half of and lay my plywood over ? Or is the there better idea, please let me know
    Thankyou

What about building the deck flush? Leave the mast step to hold a casting pedestal and build the deck in two parts on either side of the thwart.

Keep in mind that it is originally a sailboat. That means that it will probably have some bottom rocker which will limit the speed potential. The best part is that a small motor with five or six HP will propel the boat nicely. Not only that, at low speed it will not create much fuss in the water like a planing hull will do.. Better to sneak up on those big fish you are after.

It would be possible to drive the boat pretty fast with a larger motor but the boat would probably not handle very well at higher speeds.
